Taming the Monster.

To wake up in the morning and face a truly terrifying creature is not the right way to start out the day. Glance in the mirror and the yawn suddenly turns into a sharp gasp- “how did 6 hours of sleep create just chaos?” A question I ask myself daily. What exactly is there to do about the poof of frizz slowly growing larger and larger daily? At times I swear it grows hourly.

Hair stylists would categorize it as “ethnic.” Ethnic?! Since when was that a hair type. Why cant is just be simply curly? It has to have its own category. Now when I go to get my hair cut they say “oh, you have quite ‘ethnic’ hair,” and give me puzzled looks. Or when shopping in the store, hair care products come from the “ethnic” section of the aisle. It’s completely maddening. A plain shampoo and conditioner can’t control the beast, only specific types brands can ease the frizz and manage the ringlets. And that silky shine you see with straight hair- nonexistent. A dull clutter of wild curls simply doesn’t stand up to the sleekness a head of shiny strands.

When the clouds come rolling in and foggy mist of rain fly through the air… forget about style. Throw the hair in a pony tail and run for cover. Rain + curls= disaster. In humid and hot weather the afro almost has a growl. It creates its own specie and runs wild.

What an unfortunate fate to have come across. Two parents with a history of curly hair. Genetics had it out for me since birth. There was no avoiding the destiny of untamable hair. Its just time to face the facts and surrender to the inevitable, untamable, and product resistant creature I like to call “hair.”
